OUR HISTORY
 We first found other people with dementia -- online -- through the Dementia Advocacy and Support Network International (DASNI). DASNI has accomplished many "firsts" in the world of people with dementia over the last six years.
Having dementia causes extreme isolation for the individual. Once a person has been diagnosed with any medical condition, the HIPPA law requires medical personnel and other providers to protect the patient’s anonymity. Because families also tend to conceal dementia to be protective of their family member, the result is isolation once again. While well intended, these actions also make it very difficult to find other people with dementia who share the baffling experiences that come with it. Even in the midst of their families, people with dementia get lonely.
Recently our friends at DASNI decided to engage only in supportive chats and emails for people with dementia rather than organize advocacy efforts. Read about DASNI’s history and some of the remarkable personal pages of DASNI members who keep blogs and websites of their own. Many dedicated people in DASNI continue to advocate as individuals in their local areas.
As a growing group, Dementia USA invites others with dementia willing to speak out about living with dementia to join us in our public efforts in advocacy, education and support.

The history at Dementia USA has only just begun. It will be updated as we proceed, and if you want it, your own name may be here in the future.
Dementia USA will bring early dementia out of the back bedrooms (where people kept Granny when she was “getting peculiar”) into the light of day. As we do it, we will educate the general public about the nature and needs of people with early dementia. As Charley says,
"It Ain't Over Yet!"
